Musical style and influence
Blues for the Red Sun combines acid rock , [5] grunge , [6] psychedelic rock , space rock and doom metal , and is often compared to the work of bands such as Black Sabbath , Hawkwind , Blue Cheer , [7] and Alice in Chains . [8] The record is considered the pioneer of stoner rock . [7] Daniel Bukszpan, author of The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal, wrote that this album has influenced countless bands. [9] Many see Blues for the Red Sun as “the template for the 21st century bands that have followed Kyuss innovation.” [10] Exclaim! he called it an album that opens "the way for groups like Monster Magnet and a number of other practicing desert grunge ." [eleven]
The author of A to X of Alternative Music, Steve Taylor, wrote that, compared to music, “the lyrics really can't compete” and called the album’s lyrics “petrified, impeccable phrases.” [12] Rolling Stone called “Thong Song” - a song about flip flops [13] - “immortal.” [14]
Guitarist Josh Homme hooked his low-profile guitars to bass combos for a kind of distortion , [2] also using Wah-wah . [9] Wayne Robins of Newsday described Omma's reefs as “post- Hendrix guitar gusts.” [15] Some songs in Blues for the Red Sun have a slow tempo and groove- loaded rhythms. [6]
