Biography
George Gardner was born in May 1812 (according to some sources, in May 1809 or in 1810) in Glasgow (or in the village of Argentine ) in the gardener's family. He studied at Ardrossan , in 1829 he entered the University of Anderson in Glasgow (now the University of Strathclyde ). In 1835 he graduated from the university with a degree in medicine.
In 1836, Gardner, with the support of William Jackson Hooker, went to Brazil , and in July arrived in Rio de Janeiro . For five years he traveled to Brazil, in 1841 he returned to England. In 1842, George Gardner was elected a member of the Linnaeus Society of London .
In 1844, Gardner was appointed chief gardener of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya in Ceylon . He began to prepare a monograph of the flora of the island, but did not have time to finish it. From 1846 to 1847, Gardner was editor in chief of the Calcutta Journal of Natural History .
March 10, 1849, George Gardner died.
