Biography

Gabriel Zelensky was born on March 26, 1909 in the village of the 2nd Kuban Sugar Plant (now the Korenovsky District of the Krasnodar Territory ). After finishing four grades of school, he worked at a factory. In June 1941, Zelensky was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since July of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War . He took part in the battles on the Bryansk , Central , 1st Ukrainian and 1st Belorussian fronts. On October 16, 1943, he was wounded in battle. Many times he performed special tasks of command behind enemy lines. By February 1944, Petty Officer Gabriel Zelensky commanded a platoon of the 135th separate reconnaissance unit of the 143rd Rifle Division of the 47th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front. He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Ukrainian SSR [1] .

Zelensky repeatedly distinguished himself during the Soviet forces crossing the Sejm , Desna , Dnieper and Pripyat , delivered “languages” and important information to his command, carried out sabotage raids. April 18, 1944 Zelensky died while completing a combat mission near the Moshenaya railway station in the Kovel district of the Volyn region of the Ukrainian SSR [2] . He was buried in Kovel [1] [3] [4] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of August 23, 1944, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown", Sergeant Gabriel Zelensky was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union [1] [4] .
