The action takes place in Lithuania in the XIV century. Pilenai is the name of a Lithuanian castle burned by its defenders when they no longer had the strength to resist the crusaders. The legend of this feat is preserved in the memory of the people. The composer and the librettist paint the heroic images of patriots, the cunning of the enemy.
The patriotic and heroic content of the opera was deeply embodied in music. The composer organically translated the intonations of Lithuanian folk songs without resorting to quotes. Drama and lyrics naturally blend in the score.
In 1957, awarded the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR [2]
