Biography
Born in 1914 in the village of Lisichyn (near Podravski Slatina), in which anti-monarchist sentiments were strong. Originally from an ordinary peasant family. At the age of 14 he joined the youth movement of the Independent Democratic Party "Rural Circle", soon becoming head of its branch in Lisichyn. He was evaluated as a good leader, as a result of which, at the age of 17, Nikola was elected and the village headman. In 1936 he was drafted into the Royal Yugoslav Army, in which he served the due time.
After the occupation of the country began, Nicola took refuge in his native village for some time. He refused to cooperate with the German authorities and the Croatian fascists, as a result of which he began to be persecuted. After the outbreak of war between Germany and the USSR, together with a group of armed peasants, Milyanovich fled to the forest. However, back in May, a small detachment of 15 people, armed with only one machine gun, launched a guerrilla war against the Ustasha with the aim of ending the Croatian terror.
In the summer of 1941, about two hundred Ustashi broke into the village of Stare-Krivai, capturing 50 men and women, tying them up and sending them to the forest for reprisal. Nikola, along with his group, found out the route of the Ustash patrol and prepared an ambush. The partisans opened fire after the shot of Nikola from a machine gun. The Ustashi lost fifteen people dead and fled, and managed to save all the prisoners. A successful ambush gave people hope for liberation from occupation. The key to success was the skillful tactics of Nikola: he divided his group into columns one person wide, which were built from the village to the forest. The first line fired a volley and stepped back, allowing you to shoot the second line of partisans and reload their weapons, which gave the impression of a much larger number of partisans.
This group of Nikola acted independently until October 1941, when he moved to Papuk and was included in the Paputsk-Krndi partisan company. In the same year, Milyanovich led the 1st Slavonic partisan detachment, retaining his personal machine gun. In 1943, Nicola received the military rank of captain and headed the Officers' School in Rupnitsa (near Zvechevo). In 1944, he was promoted to major, leading the 18th Slavonic shock brigade.
July 1, 1944 Nikola Milyanovich died near Levanski Varosha, having been blown up on an anti-personnel mine. On June 19, 1945, by the decree of AVNOY, Milyanovich was posthumously awarded the title of People's Hero. Until 1991, one of the streets of Virovititsa bore his name.
