History

Only four cars were produced, modified from Tipo C with an engine mounted in the chassis and with a thin body. [2] [3] The chassis was taken with Tipo C , and the engine with 8C 2900 . The 308 was developed by Joaquino Colombo under the control of Enzo Ferrari , who was then still part of the Alfa Romeo racing team - Alfa Corse . The car made its debut at the Prix Grand Prix in 1938, two cars debuted: one was Tazio Nuvolari , the other Luigi Villorezi . [4] Both riders left the race, although Nuvolari set a lap record. The next race was the Tripoli Grand Prix . New models 312 (3-liter, 12-cylinder) and 316 were launched, and 308 was in reserve. In the end, 308 lost to Herman Lang on the Mercedes-Benz W154 . In this race, Eugenio Siena died crashing into a wall.

In 1938, at Milla Milla Clemente Biondetti and Carlo Maria Pintacuda took the first two places. The Biondetti car used an engine from Tipo 308 (300 hp (220 kW)), and the Pintacuda car from 2900B and produced 225 hp (168 kW). [5]

In 1938 and 1939, Raymond Sommer managed to win a couple of Hillclimb competitions in La Turbie at 308, [4] and in the 1940s, Jean-Pierre Wimill won a couple of races in Europe. One of the cars was sold to Argentina , where Oscar Alfredo Galves ( Óscar Alfredo Gálvez ) successfully performed and won on it. Galvez's model now stands in Argentina at the Juan Manuel Fangio Museum. [one]

One of the cars was still sold in the United States after World War II, where Louis Durant took 6th place in it in 1946 for 500 miles of Indianapolis, and the following year Walt Brown took 7th place. In 1948, Johnny Mauro took 8th place on it, and now this model is in the Museum of the Hall of Fame in Indianapolis Motor Speedway , [6] it is possible that this is the car that participated in Indianapolis in 1940, and at the same time time was an ex-car of Raymond Sommer. Of all 3 liter cars for the Alfa Romeo formula (Tipo 308, 312 , 316 ), none have achieved great success. Instead, a new model with 1,500 cc was released. engine for the Vuaturett class Alfa Romeo 158 , developed in 1937 and first participated in the Siano Cup in August 1938.
