Biography

Mikhail Zevakhin was born on September 12, 1922 in the village of Gorevskaya (now the Sanchursky District of the Kirov Region ). He graduated from seven classes of the school and flying club, studied at the Sarapul Agricultural College. In 1939, Zevakhin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1940 he graduated from the Molotov Military Aviation Pilot School. Since May 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in the battles near Rzhev , the liberation of the Smolensk region [1] .

By September 1943, Senior Lieutenant Mikhail Zevakhin commanded the link of the 11th separate reconnaissance air regiment of the 3rd Air Army of the Kalinin Front . By that time, he had made 198 sorties for the bombing and reconnaissance of enemy troops and targets. He took part in 20 air battles in which he personally shot down 2 German planes. In one of the battles in January 1944, he was seriously wounded, but managed to bring the plane to the airfield. He was taken to the Kazan Military Hospital, but the doctors could not save him - Zevakhin died on January 13, 1944. He was buried in Kazan at the Arskoye cemetery in a mass grave with two members of his crew [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 4, 1944, for "exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command and shown heroism and courage," Senior Lieutenant Mikhail Zevakhin was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and two Orders of the Red Banner . Forever enrolled in the lists of personnel of the military unit [1] .

Memory

The Hero Monument by the sculptor V. I. Rogozhin was erected in Sarapul at the address: 24. Pervomaiskaya Street, 24. The bust on the pedestal in the form of a truncated column was opened on May 5, 1980 [2] .
