Ayachcho ( fr. Ajaccio [3] [aʒaksjo] , Cor . Aiacciu [aˈjattʃu] ) - the largest city and port of the island of Corsica , the administrative center of the department of South Corsica . Located on the west coast of the island, in the bay of the same name, at the confluence of the Gravona River.

History
The time of the emergence of the Latin village of Ajax, which stood a few kilometers north of the modern city, is not known exactly. First mentioned in letters of Pope Gregory the Great . In the Middle Ages , the city had its own bishop . In its present place, Ajaccio was founded in 1492 by merchants of the Genoese Bank of St. George [4] . During the first decades it was a fortified colony of the Genoese Republic , Corsicans were forbidden to settle here. In 1553-59 - under the French occupation . Ajaccio became part of France only in 1768 [4] .
Ajaccio and Napoleon
Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon I. Despite the fact that Napoleon himself lived in the city for only 9 years, his image is still present in Ajaccio in the form of trinkets, souvenirs, coffee cans, bottles of wine and liquors, in postcards and commemorative medals. The street names of the modern city are associated with the Bonaparte family. In the city there are boulevards of Madame Mother , King Jerome , the Imperial Prince , Napoleon, Bonaparte Street, Cardinal Fesch , the King of Rome , Letizia Square. Many cafes and hotels are named after Napoleon [5] . One of the attractions is the grotto of Napoleon, in which he spent his free time in childhood. There is also a monument in honor of the capture of Moscow.
