Talkitna [2] ( English Talkeetna ) - a statistically isolated area in boron Matanuska Susitna , Alaska , USA . The mayor of the area from July 18, 1997 to July 23, 2017 was a cat named Stubbs .

Content
Geography
Talkitna is located in the southern part of the state at the confluence of three rivers: Susitna , Chulitna and Talkitna . The area is 111.2 km², of which 3.6 km² are open water areas. The settlement is served by the eponymous airport . To the largest city of Alaska, Anchorage , two and a half hours by road (about 125 kilometers in a straight line). Talkitna is the last base for expeditions setting off to conquer the highest mountain of North America, Denali [3] , to which about 95 kilometers are straight from the settlement.
History
The settlement was founded in 1896 as a mining village. In 1915, Talkitna became the headquarters of the Alaska Engineering Commission , which built the Alaskan Railway , while the population of the village increased to a thousand people. In 1919, the laying of the railway was completed, and the population of Talkitna began to decline, in 1959 only about 80 people lived in Talkitna [4] . In 1964, the construction of the highway from Anchorage to Talkitna was completed. In the same year, the settlement was significantly damaged by the Great Alaskan earthquake , although Talkitna was located about 180 kilometers from the epicenter.
Since 1981, the Bachelor Auction & Ball competition has been held annually in Talkitna, and since 1986 the Wilderness Woman Contest [5] . On April 26, 1993, Talkitna was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places . In June 2007, the only school burned down in Talkitna (96 students, 7 teachers studied), a new one was opened in January 2010.
Mayor Stubbs
In April 1997, a cat was born in Talkitna, who was nicknamed Stubbs . On July 18 of that year, while still a kitten [6] , Stubbs was elected mayor of Talkitna [7] . The mayor's residence is located in the supermarket "Neglis" ( Eng. Nagley's General Store ) [8] . As of July 2012, Stubbs successfully continued his work as mayor. As of April 2013, Stubbs has over 7,000 likes on his Facebook page [9] . Personally, 30–40 tourists meet with the mayor of Talkitna daily [8] . In September 2013, Stubbs was hospitalized after a dog attack, the mayor of Talkitna was seriously injured. [10] On July 21, 2017, at the age of 20, Stubbs died of old age in a dream. A possible successor is a kitten named Denali [11] .
In the movie
- It is believed that Talkitna served as the prototype of the fictional town of Siseli from the TV series "The North Side " (1990-1995) [12] [13] .
- In 2002, the film “ Snow Dogs ” was released, the action of which in the story takes place in Talkitna.
