Biography

Gennady Zakharov was born on October 25, 1922 in the village of Seloma (now Arzamas district of the Nizhny Novgorod region ). In 1930, his father was dispossessed and sent to Siberia, but he soon moved to Kazan , where his family came to him. Zakharov graduated from Kazan school number 88. In August 1944 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . He graduated from the regimental school and the Saratov Military Communications School. Since November 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Stalingrad , Stepnoy , Voronezh and 2nd Ukrainian fronts. By September 1943, Lieutenant Gennady Zakharov commanded a telephone and cable platoon of the 107th Guards Separate Communications Company of the 78th Guards Rifle Division of the 7th Guards Army of the Steppe Front. He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .

On September 25, 1943, Zakharov, as part of a group of signalmen, crossed the Dnieper to Borodaevsky Island and laid a cable to the positions of the Soviet troops on it. On September 27, during a battle near the village of Domotkan in the Verkhnedneprovsky District of the Dnepropetrovsk Region of the Ukrainian SSR, Zakharov assumed command of a rifle platoon and raised the fighters of this platoon to attack, which killed several dozen enemy soldiers and officers [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1943, for “exemplary execution of the combat missions of the command at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Lieutenant Gennady Zakharov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ” under the number 1369 [1] .

After the war, Zakharov continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1949 he graduated from the Military Academy of Communications . In 1959, with the rank of Major, Zakharov was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Kazan, then in Leningrad . Tragically died on January 26, 1969, was buried in the Northern cemetery of St. Petersburg [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree and a number of medals [1] .
