Herman I von Wenzenburg

Herman I, Count von Wenzenburg ( German: Herman I. von Winzenburg ), also known as German von Windberg ( German: Herman Windberg ; c. 1083–1122) - Count of Formbach and Radelberg in 1109–1122, Count of Wincenburg and Reinhausen, Landgrave of Thuringia in 1111-1122.

The son of Meginhard IV von Formbach and his wife Matilda, daughter of Eli II von Reinhausen. At a young age he was raised by his uncle, Udo von Gleichen-Reinhausen, Bishop of Hildesheim.

Earl of Windberg (1097). Count of Rathelberg (1107). Count of Wenzenburg (1109). Margrave (1112). Margrave of Saxony (1114).

Founded the monastery of Reinhausen (1108).

During the reign of Henry V, Count German I enjoyed great influence at the court of the emperor. In 1111 or 1112, he became the first landgrave of Thuringia after its separation from the Duchy of Saxony .

In 1109, Count Reinhausen Herman III died without leaving any heirs. As a close relative (nephew), Hermann von Wenzenburg received his possessions. In the same year, his father died, and Herman inherited the counties of Windberg and Formbach. He also became Earl of Leinegau.

Family and children

Herman was married twice. First wife - name and origin are not known. Four children:

  • Conrad von Wenzenburg
  • Beatrice II (d. April 2, 1160) - abbess of Quedlinburg from 1138
  • Dietrich von Wenzenburg (d. February 28, 1127), Bishop of Münster since 1118.
  • Gottfried von Wenzenburg, Canon of Munster.

The second wife was Gedwig of Carinthia-Istria. Children:

  • Sophia von Wenzenburg (d. March 25, 1160) - wife of Albrecht the Bear , Margrave of Brandenburg
  • Herman II (killed January 30, 1152) - Count of Wienzenburg, Palatinate of Saxony
  • Mehtilda (d. May 23, 1155) - from 1128 the wife of Udo IV , Count Stade, Margrave of the Northern Mark
  • Henry III von Windberg (d. 1146) - Count of Assel and Plesse.
  • Wolfgang.

The widow of Herman I von Wincenburg Gedwig of Carinthia-Istria in 1123 married Adalbert II, Count von Bogen.
