Scarborough ( Scarborough [ˈskɑrbəroʊ] ) is an area in the eastern part of the city of Toronto , Ontario , Canada . Includes the territory of the former city of Scarborough, a municipality that was merged with Toronto in 1998 . It borders Lake Ontario in the south, Victoria Park Avenue in the west, Stills Avenue in the north, and the Rouge River and Pickering in the east.

In 1954, Scarborough became part of the Toronto Metropolis as one of five districts, and in 1983 received city status. For more than 200 years, it has grown from a cluster of small villages to a large city with its diverse cultural community. Named after the English city of Scarborough , North Yorkshire in 1796 by Elizabeth Simcoe, who was impressed by the , reminding her of the white cliffs in her homeland.
Some areas in Scarborough are a popular destination for new immigrants to Canada. As a result, Scarborough is one of Greater Toronto 's most diverse and multicultural areas, as well as a home for various religious groups. The area includes several popular Toronto natural attractions such as Scarborough Cliffs and . Scarborough has been declared the greenest area of all Toronto. [3]
