Club career

David is a graduate of the Swansea City Youth Academy; at 17, he joined the club’s senior team. During his first training with the senior team, the young goalkeeper received a serious wrist injury that stopped his progress [1] . However, the team’s head coach decided to include Cornell in the first team after Dimitrios Constantopoulos left the club. On August 25, 2009, David made his debut in the League Cup match against Scunthorpe , coming out from the first minutes [2] . In 2010, Cornell was returned to the reserve team, as the positions of the main and reserve goalkeeper of the team were firmly occupied by Dorus de Vries and Yves Ma-Kalambay.

In the second half of the 2010/11 season, David Cornell was leased to the Wales Premier League club “ Port Talbot Town ” [3] , in which he played 14 matches, 5 of which defended “to zero” [4] .

David spent the 2011/12 season at Hereford United , a club in the second English league . At first it was leased for a month [5] , but then it was extended until the end of the season [6] . For “Hereford,” Cornell played 27 matches in all tournaments, including 24 in the league.

In the 2013/14 season, Cornell was leased for a year at St Mirren , playing in the Scottish Premier League. [7] David started the season unsuccessfully, having missed 10 goals in 5 championship matches, as well as 2 goals in the Scottish League Cup match. Of these six matches, the club lost 5 and one tied. In December 2013, the lease contract with him was terminated ahead of schedule [8] .

International Career

In 2007, Cornell was first summoned to the youth team of Wales under 17 years old. March 25, he made his debut in a match against the national team of Belarus , which ended in defeat with a score of 0: 3. In total, the goalkeeper held five meetings for the team under 17 years old. In 2009-2010, David played for the national team until the age of 19, and since 2010 he has been involved in the camp of the Welsh “ youth team”.

In November 2009, 18-year-old Cornell was unexpectedly summoned to the first team of Wales before a friendly match with Scotland by experts [9] . Then he remained the third goalkeeper and did not get into the application for the match. In October 2010, Cornell was again called up to the first national team before the game of the qualifying stage of the European Championship 2012 against Switzerland, he was declared to play as a reserve player [10] .
