Five pounds (coin)

The 5 pound (£ 5) coin is a modern counterpart to the traditional British crown coin, which was discontinued after monetary reform in the UK in 1972. The 5-pound coin is identical with the crown in size and weight, and is minted in copper-nickel alloys in an approximate proportion: 75% copper and 25% nickel; special versions of the coin were minted using gold and silver. Before the appearance of the 5 pound coin in 1990, the coin had 25 pence characteristics, the appearance of the 5 pound coin as a modern counterpart to the crown is determined by the desire to justify the size and high cost of producing the coin by a factor of twenty [1] .

A coin of 5 pounds is legal tender , that is, it can be paid anywhere, but it is mainly used as a collection souvenir, and it is very rarely in cash, however, coins of 5 pounds must be accepted by all UK post offices [2 ] .

The obverse almost always uses the standard portrait of Queen Elizabeth II , in 1990-1997 the design of the coin was used by Rafael Maclow , and since 1998 the design of Ian Rank-Bradley , for special cases the obverse can change.
