Biography
Grigory Zaporozhchenko was born on April 19, 1907 in the city of Raisins (now - Kharkov region of Ukraine ). After graduating from seven classes of the school he worked in production. In July 1941, Zaporozhchenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. By September 1943, the guard sergeant Grigory Zaporozhchenko commanded the communications department of the 104th guards separate communications company of the 73rd guards rifle division of the 7th guards army of the Steppe Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .
On the night of September 24–25, 1943, together with the advanced units of Zaporozhchenko, he crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Borodaevka in the Verkhnedneprovsky district of the Dnepropetrovsk region of the Ukrainian SSR and laid a communication cable along the bottom of the river. During the period from September 27 to October 7, the Zaporozhchenko branch corrected about 100 cable damage, took part in repelling a number of German counterattacks [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1943, for "exemplary execution of the combat missions of the command at the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the guard, senior sergeant Grigory Zaporozhchenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the medal " Golden Star ” under the number 1348 [1] .
After the war, Zaporozhchenko was demobilized. He returned to the Kharkiv region, worked on the collective farm as a field farmer, foreman. He died on November 30, 1979, was buried in the village of Borovaya, Kharkov region of Ukraine [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
