Biography and Creativity
There was no information left about the life of Torii Kiyosige, except that he lived and worked in Edo , having entered Torii Kyyonobu’s workshop in 1724 and worked there until the mid-1760s.
Torii Kiyosige in his works followed the tradition of the Torii school, creating portraits of actors and beauties. Also, the work of Okumura Masanobu strongly influenced him , followed by Kiyosige used a vertical format (hasirae-ban), a benizuri-e printing technique, which allowed adding green and pink colors to the ink. Another printing technique in which Kiyosige worked was the Urusi-e ( varnish pictures ): applying bone glue on red and black colors, giving the effect of a varnish coating [1] .
In the composition, Kieseige most often performed 1-2 characters in free space, occupying about three-fourths of the figure. The upper part was given under the poetic inscription.
Torii Kiyosige I was also known as an illustrator of children's books and comic novels (kokkeibon).
