Biography
He came from the bourgeois class; was born in Irkutsk on May 16 ( 28 ), 1854 . Educated in Kazan; at the end of the course at the 2nd Kazan Gymnasium ( 1871 ) he entered the Imperial Kazan University , where in 1876 he graduated from the course with a PhD in natural sciences and a gold medal for his essay on chloral hydrides of fatty acids. Until the spring of 1884, with a short break, when he left for Siberia, he occupied the place of laboratory assistant, first at the medical chemistry, then at the technical laboratory of the university. In December 1880 he defended his thesis for the degree of Master of Chemistry and on February 8, 1881 was approved by the privat-docent of Kazan University ; taught physical and theoretical chemistry, as well as a (temporarily) general physics course. Since June 1882, he led classes in quantitative chemical analysis.
Since May 18, 1884 he is an assistant professor in the Department of Technical Chemistry at Moscow University . In the fall of 1884 he defended his doctoral dissertation at St. Petersburg University ; at the end of 1884 he was approved as an extraordinary professor at Moscow University; Since March 24, 1886 - an ordinary professor in the department of technology and technical chemistry of Kazan University .
He died in Kazan on March 2 ( 15 ), 1902 from croupous pneumonia.
Scientific activity
The main works are devoted to the optical activity of chemical compounds, as well as organic chemistry. Together with A. M. Zaitsev, in 1877 he obtained acetic anhydride by the action of acetyl chloride on glacial acetic acid; in 1883 proved the bicyclic structure of borneol and camphor molecules; first showed (1884) that the specific refraction of a solution is equal to the sum of the specific refractions of a dissolved substance and a solvent; found a relationship between the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization and the minimum angle of deviation of the refracted beam; showed (1890) that the specific rotation of the mixture is the average of the values of the specific rotation of its components.
