Born into an aristocratic family, a descendant of the Sultan. By profession a veterinarian. He worked as chief veterinarian until 1952.
The famous Indonesian critic H. B. Yassin described the place of Marah Rusli in Indonesian literature as "the father of a modern Indonesian novel." His social-everyday novel “City Nurbaya” (1922, Russian translation, 1961) on the opposition of the views of an enlightened society to the matriarchal traditions of the Minangkabau people was awarded a state prize in 1969 as one of the central works of Indonesian literature at the stage of its formation. The same theme develops in the novel "Relatives and Cousins" (1956). The historical and ethnographic novel La Hami (1953) is inspired by the author’s three-year work on Fr. Sumbawa in 1915-1918.
