Biography
Ivan Zaitsev was born on September 22, 1909 in the village of Aleksandrovka (now - Serdobsky district of the Penza region ). He graduated from high school. In 1928, Zaitsev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1929, he graduated from the school of junior commanders. In 1930, Zaitsev was demobilized. In 1933 he graduated from the Saratov Engineering Reclamation Institute. In 1941, Zaitsev was re-drafted into the army. Since June of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in the Battle of Stalingrad , the battles on the Don and Seversky Donets , the battle for the Dnieper , forcing the Western Bug , Vistula , Oder , Spree , Elba . By January 1945, Colonel Ivan Zaitsev commanded the 40th Engineer-Engineer Brigade of the 3rd Guards Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .
On January 28, 1945, the Zaitsev brigade broke through the German defenses and took an active part in the liberation of Kielce and the forcing of the Oder in the area of Züchen , 4 kilometers north of Khoben . The brigade was able to quickly build a bridge over the Oder and provide cover for the right flank of the army [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 6, 1945, for “skillful command of the brigade and shown courage and heroism”, Colonel Ivan Zaitsev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6528 [1] .
After the war ended, Zaitsev continued his service in the Soviet Army. Last position - Deputy Commander of the Kiev Military District for the construction and housing of troops. In 1972, with the rank of lieutenant general, he was sacked. He lived in Kiev. He died on December 7, 1993, was buried at the Baikov cemetery in Kiev [1] .
Also known as a playwright, under the pseudonym Ivan Rachada wrote more than ten plays on the theme of the Great Patriotic War. Among them: “There is such a party”, “When the dead come to life”, “People in greatcoats”, “Over the blue Danube”, “The road is named”, “What hawks are afraid of”, “Nina Bezdolnaya (Virgin Mary)”, “Themis’s court "," Marshal Zhukov "and others [1] .
Member of the Union of Writers of the USSR , Honored Builder of the Ukrainian SSR. He was also awarded two orders of the Red Banner , the Order of Kutuzov of the 2nd degree, two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, orders of the Red Banner of Labor and the Red Star , and a number of medals [1] .
