Oscar Karlovich Klemm ( 1822 - February 1891 , Vilnius ) - Tsarist general of the Russian Empire, the first commandant of the Coven fortress , who served there in 1887-1889.

Biography

His military career began in 1840 with the rank of ensign. In the years 1870-1875. was commander of the 17th Infantry Division. In 1871, Klemm was given the rank of lieutenant general . In 1886 he was appointed commandant of the small Bendero fortress , then briefly in Moscow, after which he was sent to the Coven province .

Service in Lithuania

From September 13, 1887 to September 4, 1889 he served as the first commandant of the Coven fortress, living in a large mansion converted for the needs of the military. Under the leadership of Klemm, the construction of the fortress was completed, its garrison and artillery calculations were organized. The period of stay in the fortress was short-lived, but difficult and eventful. On April 9, 1889, Klemm Ball was appointed assistant commander of the Vilnius Military District , but in 1891 the death of a general interrupted the career of a general.

Serving and deceased Vilnius, Klemm was buried in Kaunas, where, as is believed, he bequeathed to bury himself. Due to the longer period of appointment in the fortress, service in it is considered one of the most striking achievements in his life. The tomb of Klemm with a massive tombstone has been preserved in the old Fredsky cemetery.

Old residents of the city told a story according to which in 1887 the commandant was expecting a visit to the governor of Kaunas, suggesting that the civil authorities of the city should be primarily represented to the military leadership. At the same time, the governor thought differently and waited for the newly appointed commandant to come to the civilian leadership for a report. Both officials were expecting mutual visits for two months and could not decide which of them was more important, and their mutual acquaintance began with complaints to St. Petersburg.

Personal life

Oscar Klemm was the father of seven children. His son, Vasily Oskarovich Klemm (1861-1938) was the first consul of the Russian Empire in India , and during the Civil War he was the diplomatic representative of Admiral Kolchak in Vladivostok . Oscar's older brother, Wilhelm Karlovich Klemm (1815-1891), was a well-known Russian topographer and draftsman, who headed the drawing workshop of the Main Engineering Directorate.

In 2011, Kaunas was visited by representatives of the Bolton-King-Beck-Klemm-Grotten family, who arrived from England, Australia, France and Finland. After honoring the historical memory of the famous ancestor, they visited the places where General Oscar Klemm served.
