History
The museum was founded in 1962. Before the museum was opened, a classical lyceum worked in a building constructed in 1894 according to the design of Alexander Theodor Decker . The museum was opened when the city of Joensuu in 1961 and 1962 received the testament of the collection of pharmacist Olavi Turtiainen and Mrs. Arla Söderberg. In 1962 and 1974, Onni Okkonen , a former professor of art history, donated his rich collection to the museum.
Exposition
The museum has a permanent exhibition, which includes samples of art from the Ancient World and the Middle Ages. The exhibition also includes a collection of Chinese art. Among Finnish artists, authors such as Robert Ekman , Werner Holmberg , Gunnar Berndtson and Albert Edelfelt are represented . There is also a large collection of icons. On the ground floor of the museum are temporary exhibitions that present works by contemporary Finnish and foreign artists.
