Biography

Born in a wealthy family of state peasants . At the age of 20, he inherited from the father-forester 40 hectares of land, then became a rural headman. He married a girl named Barbara, had three daughters: Eve, Onu / Anna and Mariyon / Maryanu (the marriage certificate was preserved).

There are several versions regarding what event was a turning point in his life. One at a time, he participated in the 1863 uprising and was sentenced to exile in Siberia . According to another, the owner of these lands, Count Michal-Mikolay Oginsky , ordered the headman T. Blinda to flog several peasants for something, and in response to the refusal, he himself hit Blind with a whip. He grabbed a whip from the count, striking him, and then fled into the forest.

So Tadas was outlawed. He was hiding with a group of followers in the Beavine Forest, engaged in horse-stealing. According to legend, he often acted as a disguised priest or monk. The Tadas detachment operated mainly in the territory of Raseiniai , Telšiai and Šiauliai counties of the Coven province .

Supporters of Tadas compared him to Robin Hood - allegedly he took money and valuables from the rich and distributed them to the poor. The ill-wishers claimed that he robbed not only gentlemen, but also peasants. The life and work of Tadas Blinda gave rise to many legends and traditions, in particular, about the treasures hidden by him in the forests.

The true circumstances of the death of Tadas for a long time were the subject of controversy, until in 1993 the documents of the royal gendarmerie were found in the archives, from which it followed that Blinda, as a horse-thief, was a victim of lynching at the St. George's Fair in the town of Luok on April 22, 1877 and was buried on uninitiated land, along with suicides, in the corner of a local cemetery. No traces of the burial were found.

According to some witnesses, behind the reprisal over Blinda stood his old enemy Count Oginsky and local authorities [1] .

The Blind Image in Art

Cinema

The artistic image of Tadas Blinda first appeared in 1907 in a play by Lithuanian authors Lazdina Peleda (the sisters of the writer Sofia and Maria Ivanauskaite) and Gabrielius Landsbergis-Zhamkalnis (relative of the famous politician Vytautas Landsbergis ) “Blinda, the equalizer of the world” were hidden under this pseudonym. In the play, Blinda was presented as a hero of the common people, fighting the Polish landowners and the Russian authorities, who then ruled Lithuania. The work was enthusiastically received by the public.

Since then, Blinda’s history has been deeply rooted in Lithuanian folk culture. In the interwar times, tourist guides described the town of Luoke as the burial place of the "great equalizer of the world." Even in Soviet times, this story was used - already in a socialist tone - in theaters and publications.

In 1973, in the Lithuanian SSR, the 4-episode feature film “Tadas Blinda” was shot (directed by Balis Bratkauskas, script writer Rimantas Shavelis, starring Tadas Blinda - Vytautas Tomkus ) [2] .

In the center of the series, full of scenes of hand-to-hand fighting and horse racing and filmed in Aukstaiti National Park , was the image of a stately national leader - superman and macho. The film, as before, was a great success in Lithuania. The leading actor for a long time received letters from the audience (especially the spectators) demanding to "revive" the hero and make a continuation of the film. Although its release was approved by the Soviet authorities, many viewers perceived the film as a veiled allusion to the activities of Lithuanian partisans of the 1940s and 1950s [1] .

In 2011, the prequel of the Soviet film “Tadas Blinda. Pradzia ”(manufactured by Taurus Films / Acme Film) [3] .

The plot of the picture : 1861 , Lithuania as part of the Russian Empire. The political intrigues surrounding the abolition of serfdom suddenly turn into a peasant riot in a remote Lithuanian village. The fortress Tadas Blinda involuntarily finds herself at the epicenter of events, leading a rebel squad.
