Biography
Ivan Zaikin was born on September 23, 1907 in the village of Triputino (now the Khislavichi district of the Smolensk region ). He graduated from seven classes of the school, after which he worked as a miner at the mine in Stalin . In 1929, Zaikin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1935 he graduated from the Ryazan Artillery School. Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. By April 1945, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Zaikin commanded the 496th Ostropol Mining and Packing Mortar and Launcher Regiment of the 18th Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Czechoslovakia [1] .
On April 30, 1945, during the Soviet crossing of the Oder in the area of the city of Moravsk-Ostrava , the Zaikin regiment destroyed 4 anti-tank artillery shells, and suppressed the fire of 4 German heavy machine guns and 2 mortar batteries. Zaikin's regiment took an active part in the liberation of Moravian-Ostrava [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 29, 1945, Lt. Col. Ivan Zaikin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
After the war ended, Zaikin continued his service in the Soviet Army. In 1946, he graduated from the Higher Officer Artillery School in Leningrad. In 1955, Zaikin was sacked. He lived in Moscow . He died on October 17, 1982 [1] , was buried at the Lublin cemetery in Moscow.
He was also awarded four orders of the Red Banner , orders of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, the Red Star , and a number of medals [1] .
