Biography
Victor Zaevsky was born on August 11, 1909 in St. Petersburg . Received a secondary technical education. In 1929, Zaevsky was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1932, he graduated from the 2nd Borisoglebsk Military Aviation School. By the beginning of World War II, he held the post of head of the flying club in Kovrov . Since January 1943 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By February 1944, Captain Viktor Zaevsky was deputy squadron commander of the 392nd night bomber air regiment of the 312nd night light bomber air division of the 5th Air Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . By that time, he had already completed 60 sorties to reconnaissance and bombard accumulations of manpower, military equipment and military targets of the enemy. Particularly distinguished during the Korsun-Shevchenkovsky operation . On the night of February 16-17, 1944, Zaevsky, along with navigator Vladimir Lakatosh , bombed enemy troops in the village of Shenderovka, Korsun-Shevchenkovsky District, Cherkasy Region, Ukrainian SSR, on a Po-2 aircraft. Despite the fact that the target was 145 kilometers from the airfield, non-flying weather, icing of the aircraft, the pilots successfully dropped bombs on it. Thanks to the fires that occurred, the rest of the crews and artillery received a good guideline for hitting the enemy [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 23, 1945, for “exemplary performance of command missions on the front of the battle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism”, Captain Viktor Zaevsky was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal " Under the number 4924 [1] .
After the war, Zaevsky continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1953, with the rank of major, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Leningrad. He died on August 21, 1977, was buried at the Novo-Volkovsky cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner and two Orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
