Story

The famous 45-year-old composer Anthony Manev, late at night, returning home from the bar, unexpectedly finds in his car a young beautiful girl named Dorothea. In the process of dating, it turns out that Dorothea is naive, timid, but somehow strange. The girl begs home to Anthony. There she asks him to play something, always her own. Anthony, wondering at himself, agrees and plays her recently written composition. After the performance, the girl correctly names the work, despite the fact that she was his first listener. It turns out that she lives in a madhouse under the supervision of Dr. Yurukova, but at the same time works in the city.

In the morning, Manev does not find the girl in the apartment and, shocked by everything that happened last night, hurries to the clinic and talks with Dr. Yurukova. There Manev learns that the girl suffers from schizophrenia , although at that time she had not had seizures for more than a year. Dr. Yurukova tells Anthony that Dorothea is extremely impressionable and should not be very worried. In addition, she explains that sometimes a girl can read minds. Dorothea suffered two psychological injuries in childhood: the death of her father before her eyes and later the harassment of her uncle, to whom she moved shortly after her father's death. Dorothea worked in a workshop of applied art with a heavy press. The doctor asks Manev to find an easier job for the girl. Manev agrees and soon finds for Dorothea the work of a scribe of notes. Manev showed her the correspondence of notes and sounds, and Dorothea could even “hear” what she wrote. Music begins to drag Dorothea more and more deeply.

Upon learning that Dorothea has nowhere to live, and in the hospital, it’s becoming difficult for Dr. Yurukova to keep the girl as a patient, Manev agrees to shelter the girl for an indefinite period of time. Dorothea gradually liberated, talks about herself, shares her thoughts with Anthony. However, often her thoughts and judgments perplexed him. He is an egoist , a pragmatist , and she is a romantic , and even with strange judgments, the main one of which is that she dreams of flying like a bird. Even the plot of the ballet Swan Lake , on which Manev brought her to her, was alien to her, because in him the person wanted to turn from a bird into a person. Once, after another confidential conversation, Dorothea reaches out Manev’s hand, and after a few words she flew. After this flight, they first and only time had an affinity ...

The next day, Manev was so shocked by everything that had happened that, having arrived at the hospital, he told Dr. Yurukova about everything. She tried to calm him down, but Anthony's shock was very strong. Under a made-up pretext, he leaves the city all night, forgetting that Dorothea is a telepath. And Dorothea, also meeting with the doctor the day before, realized that Manev was too callous a person to understand her. Having returned home in the morning, Anthony finds the apartment empty. He rises to the roof, where he often talked with Dorothea, and notices that an ambulance drives into the wasteland, which is visible from the roof of the house. It turns out that the body of Dorothea was found in the wasteland with damage, as if it had been thrown from a height, and then transferred to a wasteland. Manev had an alibi , so he was beyond suspicion. And the fact that Dorothea was able to fly, he did not tell anyone, because no one would have believed him anyway. But Manev realized that she simply fell from the sky, maybe even on purpose. And already no power is able to return the only human being in the world who could fly ...
