Biography

Born in 1918 in a peasant family. In the 1930s, he moved with his parents to the Koltubank station. He worked on a collective farm.

In 1940, he was drafted into the Red Army , ended up in the 169th Infantry Division , stationed in Ukraine , in the Kamenetz-Podolsky area . He took part in the battles from the first days of the war.

At the beginning of November 1942, the 169th Infantry Division held defense at the Krasnoarmeysk - Ivanovka - Chervlenoye line . On the night of November 7-8, 1942, a group of reconnaissance officers of the 434th Infantry Regiment carried out reconnaissance near the village of Solyanka in order to capture the “language”. A group was discovered near the enemy’s trench and a machine gun was fired at from a bunker. The Red Army Karhanin crept up to the bunker, threw two grenades at him, but the machine gun continued to fire at the scouts. Then Karhanin crept up to the bunker and covered it with his body, which allowed the reconnaissance group to destroy the machine-gun nest.

He was buried in the territory of a certain subsidiary farm, after the war he was reburied in a mass grave in the village of Solyanka.

November 30, 1942 the Red Army Karhanin was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Star . [one]

Streets in the village of Koltubanovsky and the village of Chervlёnoe are named after the hero. At gateway No. 7 of the Volga-Don Canal , in the area of ​​which the feat was accomplished, a memorial plaque was installed in 1981; also the board is installed on the site of the feat [2] [3] . There is a monument on the grave.
