Professional career
Abril made his professional ring debut in December 2005 . By the fourth match, he met the same young beginner boxer, Troy Harden (4-0) and defeated him on points. In August 2006, he drew a duel with the American Marcus Brondax.
June 27, 2008 suffered a first defeat, lost on points by a separate decision of the judges to the Colombian boxer, Braidis Preiscott in a ten-round rating match.
January 22, 2010 lost by a split decision to the undefeated Henry Lund (16-0).
In September 2010, won the Latin American WBC lightweight title.
On September 22, 2011 in Panama he defeated the Venezuelan boxer, Miguel Acosta, and won the title of interim WBA world lightweight champion.
March 14, 2012 in the battle for a full WBA title , met with American Brandon Rios . Despite the clear advantage of the Cuban, the judges gave the victory to Rios. Rios could not fit into the framework of the weight category, and was not awarded the champion belt [1] .
On March 2, 2013, Richard Abril, in the battle for the full WBA world title , defeated Sharif Bougir (23-0) [2] [3] on the points of the undefeated Ugandan boxer.
