Biography

Pre-war years

A native of a peasant family, he worked in agriculture. After Lithuania joined the USSR, he got a job in the police, entered the bodies of the NKVD of the Lithuanian SSR, and held the post of operative officer of the district department of the NKVD.

World War II

At the beginning of the war, Stasis was enlisted in a fighter battalion. After the defeat of the main forces on the North-Western Front with a group of policemen, after a long hike along German rear, I got to the Red Army units. He was evacuated to the Kostroma region, lived at the Ney station of the Northern Railway. In 1942 he was admitted to the CPSU (b) .

In January 1942, Sheinauskas was drafted into the Red Army, sent to the front in the month of December. He served as a gunner of the 224th artillery regiment, from December 1942 to August 1943 he fought on the Central Front, from October 1943 on the 1st Baltic Front. In January 1944, for military distinctions he was awarded the medal "For Courage", the second medal was awarded in September 1944. In the same month, as part of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division, he participated in the battles to liberate the Baltic states and break through the defenses in the Kelme-Tilsit direction.

On October 13, 1944, while advancing the Red Army to the Neman in the area of ​​the village of Plaine (18 km northwest of Tilsit ), the advancing units were counterattacked. The gun of Junior Sergeant Sheinauskas was in combat formation at the position of the 3rd company of the 67th Rifle Regiment. 13 tanks marched on him, accompanied by infantry. From a distance of 300-400 meters, Stasis opened fire direct fire, knocking out two medium tanks. The gun remained in place even after the infantry retreated. A panorama was broken by enemy shells at the gun, the whole crew was killed, and Sheinauskas was seriously wounded. Despite the pain, he continued to fire.

As a result of the last shot, another tank was shot down, but Junior Sergeant Sheinauskas himself was mortally wounded by a fragment of a shell that exploded nearby. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945 “for exemplary performance of command missions on the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and courage and heroism shown at the same time”, junior sergeant Sheinauskas Stasis Kozievich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. On the same day he was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin.

Memory

Stasis Sheinauskas is buried in the military cemetery of the town of Pagegyai (Šilutsk district of the Republic of Lithuania). In honor of Sheinauskas, the street of the city of Rokiskis is named, a memorial plate is also installed there.
