Southern Thailand ( Thai ประเทศไทย ภาค ใต้ ) is a region in Thailand connected to Central Thailand by the Isthmus of Kra .

Geography

Southern Thailand is located on the Malay Peninsula and covers an area of 70,713 km². The narrowest part of the peninsula is the Isthmus of Kra , along which the northern border of Southern Thailand passes. Steep shores prevail on the west coast, and plains and river valleys stretch in the east. The largest river is the Tapi in Surat Thani province, whose basin is about 8000 square kilometers, so the river basin occupies about 10% of the area of Southern Thailand. The Pattani , Saiburi , Krabi and Trang rivers also flow in the region. The largest lake is Songkhla with an area of 1,040 km². In addition, there is a reservoir Jiao Lan , whose area is 165 km². It also houses the Khao Sok National Park, located in the province of Surat Thani .

The highest point is Mount Khao Lang 1815 meters above sea level. It is located in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. From the island of Phuket stretches a chain of mountains in Phuket to the center of the province. On the border with Malaysia, the Titivangs mountain range begins .

After the last ice age, islands such as Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bei formed here .

Southern Thailand is connected to Bangkok by rail and highway. Public transport was established only a few decades ago.

Highway

Phetkasem Road ( Thai ถนน เพชรเกษม ) is the longest road in Thailand. It runs from Bangkok to the Isthmus of Kra, and further along the western coast of the peninsula. From Trang province, it passes on the east coast to Hat Yai , and then ends on the border with Malaysia .

Railway

The railway connects Bangkok and Hat Yai .
