Content

Title

The scientific name of the genus was first used by Joseph Python de Tournefort in 1700 . In 1753, Karl Linney adopted this name in Species plantarum . It is formed from lat. fumus - “smoke”, which supposedly refers to the smell of plant roots.

Representatives of the genus are annual herbaceous plants with erect, rising and climbing angular stems.

Stem leaves, twice, thrice or four times dissected into narrow leaves, glabrous, bluish.

Flowers in finite simple brushes, zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical). Bracts are filmy, narrow. Sepals in an amount of 2, ovoid, rapidly falling. The corolla is white, pink or lilac, consists of two outer petals (one upper, wide, with a spur, and one lower, narrower) and two internal, the same. 2 stamens adhered to the base of the petals. Ovary ovary .

The fruit is an almost spherical nut .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, 32, 48, 64, 72, 80, 112.

Range

The greatest diversity of species is observed in the Mediterranean and North Africa . One species is common in the Himalayas , one in East Africa . Three species naturalized in North America .
