Biography

Born May 15 ( 27 ), 1812 in Tiflis in the family of an Armenian priest. He was educated, first at the Nersesyan Theological Seminary in Tiflis [1] , then at the Derpt High School . From 1835 he studied at the University of Dorpat , graduating in 1840 with a Ph.D.

He moved to St. Petersburg, where he continued to study oriental languages. On the recommendation of Academicians Fren and Bosse, on June 10, 1842, he was appointed to the Imperial Kazan University as an adjunct to the newly established Department of the Armenian Language. In 1846, he received a master's degree for the dissertation: "Review of the history of Gaikan writing from the XIV table. until modern times. "

Since 1849, after defending a dissertation with an analysis of Firdousi ’s poem “ Shahnameh ” (Kazan, 1849), he was a professor of Persian and Arabic literature in special classes at the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages . In 1869 he came to Tiflis to collect more materials about local literature and traditions; from September 1869 to August 1871 he was an inspector of the Tiflis Nersesyan seminary, then returned to Moscow and lived there until the end of his life. He died in Moscow on April 27 ( May 9 ), 1879 .

In the 1850s, being influenced by the ideas of the Russian social movement, he led the Armenian educational movement. In 1858-1864 he published in Moscow the journal “Jusis apayl” (“Northern Lights”), which influenced the development of public educational thought in Armenia. Speaking for the spiritual revival of the Armenian people, he, in particular, put forward the idea of public education, proposing to replace the ancient Armenian language “grabar”, which has long become incomprehensible to the masses, the new Armenian literary language “ashkharapar”. He held the idea that the Armenians should learn Western culture and then, fulfilling their historical purpose, to spread its benefits among the peoples of the Asian East. He argued that it was necessary to increase the number of Armenian schools, transform the curriculum of existing ones, eradicate scholasticism, send young people abroad to continue their studies; establish a special higher educational institution in Armenia. At the same time, he stood for the publication of cheap Armenian books for the people, for the establishment of bookstores and libraries in the main centers, for the development of the national scene. He also demanded an increase in the level of the clergy; in his opinion, an Academy was set up in Echmiadzin to train educated priests. He preached complete tolerance towards Catholic Catholics and Protestant Armenians. Adhered to the deistic trend in philosophy.
