Biography

Mikhail Zagorodsky was born on September 18, 1902 in the village of Yavorovka (now the Drabovsky district of the Cherkasy region of Ukraine ). After finishing six grades of school, he worked at a sugar factory. In 1922, Zagorodsky was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1932 he graduated from the Military School of the Red Elders, in 1941 - the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze . He participated in the Soviet-Finnish war . From the first day of World War II - on its fronts. He took part in the battles on the South-West , 3rd Ukrainian and 1st Belorussian fronts. By April 1945, Colonel Mikhail Zagorodsky commanded the 1010th Rifle Regiment of the 266th Rifle Division of the 5th Shock Army of the 1st Belorussian Front. Distinguished himself during the Berlin operation [1] .

On April 15 - 28, 1945, the Zagorodsky regiment broke through the enemy defenses and developed an attack on Berlin , breaking into its southeastern outskirts and then into the city center. In battles, the regiment captured three railway stations, a police department and a prison. In those battles, the Zagorodsky regiment destroyed more than 1000 enemy soldiers and officers, captured another 890, and also destroyed 9 artillery pieces, 97 machine guns , 17 mortars , captured three warehouses, 300 motorcycles , 15 machine guns, 3 artillery pieces and a large number of other trophies [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 31, 1945, for “exemplary command of the regiment in the battles for Berlin and personal courage and heroism shown at the same time”, Colonel Mikhail Zagorodsky was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 7997 [1] .

After the war, Zagorodsky continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1952, he was sacked. He lived in Kiev . He died on November 18, 1965, was buried in the Berkovetsky cemetery of Kiev [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner , World War 1 degree, Red Star , a number of medals [1] .

In honor of Zagorodsky, a street in Yavorivka was named [1] .
