Breed History

The attempt to breed was caused by a sharp reduction in the number of service dogs in the USSR during the Great Patriotic War . To provide the armed forces with guard dogs , it was decided to recreate the livestock and to breed new specialized service breeds capable of working in cold climates. Corresponding work was begun in the late 1940s in the pedigree kennel of the Central School of Military Dog Breeding “ Red Star ” based on the scarce domestic breeding material and several dogs exported from Germany after the war . The goal was to get dogs tall, physically strong, vicious, with a good coat .

As a result, along with other new breeds ( Moscow Watchdog , Black Terrier , Great Dane), dogs were bred, called Moscow divers [1] [2] .

For breeding, Newfoundland males and German shepherds were originally bred. Then, as a result of the rushing of blood of the Caucasian shepherd dogs , a rougher and more powerful type was obtained, which was preferred [3] .

For the first time, dogs of breeding groups bred in the kennel of the Central School were shown to the general public in Moscow in 1955 at the 19th Moscow City Exhibition of Dogs of Service Breeds [1] . However, the practical use of Moscow divers proved to be inappropriate.

The attempt to use the dog for rescue in the waters failed, because the dogs attacked people instead of helping them [4] . In the guard service, the Moscow diver was inferior to the black terrier, which was bred with the participation of manufacturers-divers [5] [6] .

The Moscow diver did not pass certification for the breed group [7] . Work on breeding Moscow divers was stopped, dogs were used in breeding within the Moscow City Society of Dog Breeding (MGOLS) as Newfoundlands [7] and gradually disappeared into the stock of imported Newfoundlands, which are often traditionally called divers. There is an assumption that in the film “ Friend ” in 1987 it was the Moscow diver who was shot [8] .

Appearance

The Moscow diver was a strong, hardy dog, in appearance similar to Newfoundland, but with a simpler and heavier head and coarser hair [9] .

The dog had a somewhat stretched format, a rough constitution with a powerful skeleton and well-developed muscles . Head with a wide massive skull , short blunt face, hanging triangular ears. The coat is long, straight or slightly wavy, black or black with a reddish tint, small white spots on the chest and paws were allowed. It was required that the growth of the males was not lower than 66 cm, the bitches - not lower than 63 cm [9] .
