Preppee

Preppy style originated in America in the late 40s of the XX century. Then preppy was a kind of subculture that united students of schools for the “ golden youth ”. The teenagers led a particular lifestyle, had special manners, a lexicon, were educated, educated, polite, focused on success, looked neat and tidy. They wore compulsory school uniforms and sports uniforms for tennis, lacrosse and golf. This was the basis of the preppy style ^[1] .

Typical style components are:

• Colors: deep blue, red, bright yellow, sand, gray, white, khaki, beige. Perhaps their combination with pastel tones.
• Prints: cell, rhombus, strip and the combination of these prints.

• Hairstyle: hair should be perfectly clean, shiny, look healthy, and hair natural and neat. No exotic colors for hair. Simple clips and headbands can be used as accessories (can be bright).

In the early 1960s, the Gant brothers launched the YALE C0-OP clothing line for students and teachers at Yale University . In this line under the brand Gant Shirtmakers (now Gant ) were made men's shirts, vests, polo shirts , shoes, pants, sweaters, made in discreet colors.

At the peak of popularity, the preppy style ^[3] was in the 1980s. Then the clothes of bright deep colors replaced the form of restrained tones. The style of preparatory schools and universities "Ivy League" began to be used in everyday life. The most characteristic items of that time were Gitman oxford shirts, Filson wool vests, polo shirts, Lacoste and Ralph Lauren sweaters, Alden loafers, Sperry Top-Sider top side skirts, Quoddy moccasins . In 1985, Tommy Hilfiger founded the Tommy Hilfiger brand and began creating preppy-style collections.

In the 1990s, Marc Jacobs introduced the grunge style, which had a negative effect on the popularity of preppy.

Our days

In our time, preppy, having undergone some changes, was again at the peak of its popularity ^[4] . It is chosen by young people who want to look more mature and more serious, as the prepi gives formality and efficiency to the image of a person ^[5] .

In 1970, the film "Love Story" was released . The plot developed around the relationship of Harvard University student Oliver Barrett IV and Jennifer Cavilleri, who originated from the working class. In one of the dialogs, the girl called Oliver "preppy", thereby emphasizing his privileged status in society ^[7] .

Photo album “Take Ivy” Kenzuka Ishizu , founder of Van Jacket preppy style clothing label (first published in 1965), was the result of a trip of a Japanese photographer and three authors to campuses of universities in the Ivy League ^[8] .

The second wave of popularity of preppy owes above all to the very popular TV series Gossip Girl , which tells about the difficult everyday life of the golden youth of Manhattan . Especially often it was possible to meet the images of "a la preppi" in the first seasons of the series. Privileged private school, beautiful and rich young men and women, expensive clothes from famous fashion houses. Thanks to the use of “uniform” clothes, some of the Gossip Girl characters became style icons. The most successful are images of Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf ^[5] .
