In the 1971 NBA Draft, defender Austin Carr of the University of Notre Dame was selected as the first number by the Cleveland Cavaliers Club. Sidney Weeks was chosen as the 2nd number in that draft, and Spencer Haywood was selected as the 30th.
This season, center Los Angeles Lakers Wilt Chamberlain was the first to achieve a grandmaster result of 30,000 points.
Before the start of this season, May 1, 1971 , after his first victory in the NBA, Lewis Alsindor converted to Islam and changed his name to Karim Abdul-Jabbar, which means: “generous, servant of the all-powerful” (Allah).
