Newton, Richard (artist)

Richard Newton ( born May 19, 1777 , London - December 8, 1798 , London ) is a British cartoonist.

The son of a haberdasher. Already at the age of 14, his satirical drawings began to be published under his own name by the radical publisher William Holland . Over the next seven years, Newton published about 300 Newton's drawings (often adding his own signatures to them); about half of these works are currently in the collection of the British Museum [1] . For the most part, Newton's works are an evil satire on politics, the nobility and the clergy, as well as actresses and courtesans. Died of fever at the age of 21.
