Service History

She made 3 military campaigns and did not achieve success. It was sunk on July 31, 1942 east of the Azores at a point with coordinates British sloops HMS Erne , HMS Rochester and HMS Sandwich . All 50 crew members were killed.

First trip

On January 24, 1942, the boat left Kiel and, with the approach to Helgoland on January 26 , went on a hike.

For 54 days spent at sea, she took part in the actions of two " wolf packs ":

  • February 1, 1942 - February 12, 1942 - "Schlei" ( German: Schlei )
  • March 1, 1942 - March 12, 1942 - Westfall ( German: Westwall )

On February 7, 1942, an escort of the ON-63 convoy prevented the attack, forcing the boat to sink, and then inflicting minor damage to it with depth bombs .

March 20, 1942 U-213 returned to Brest. [four]

Second Campaign

On April 23, 1942, U-213 crossed from Kiel to Lorient , and on April 25 went on a second campaign.

For 57 days spent at sea, she took part in the actions of one Wolf Pack :

  • May 21, 1942 - May 27, 1942 - Pfadfinder ( German: Pfadfinder )

May 14, 1942 U-213 landed agent Abwehr Alfred Langbein ( German: Alfred Langbein ) on the Canadian coast near St. Martin a, county of New Brunswick . [1] The mission was called Operation Grete , during which Langbein was supposed to report the withdrawal of convoys. [1] The task, however, he failed and, starting in September 1944 to experience problems with financing, was forced to surrender to the authorities. At the end of the war he was released.

On May 15, 1942, during a fog in Maine Bay, U-213 was taken aback by a destroyer and slightly damaged by depth charges .

June 20, 1942 U-213 returned to Lorient . [5]

Third Campaign and Fate

July 20, 1942 U-213 again moved from Lorient to Brest, and on April 23 went on the third and last campaign. [6]

July 31, 1942 east of the Azores sunk at a point with coordinates British sloops HMS Erne , HMS Rochester and HMS Sandwich , killing all 50 crew members.

Commander

Amelung von Warendorf

The sole boat commander from August 30, 1941 to July 31, 1942 was the lieutenant tsur zee Amelung von Warendorff ( German Oberleutnant zur See Amelung von Varendorff ). Representative of the Westphalian line of the noble family of Warendorf, known since the 13th century. In 1935, a cadet entered the service of the German Navy. Maritime training took place at the Gorkh Fok training barracks, and officer training at the naval school in Murvik . In 1938, Fendrick von Warendorf was awarded the rank of lieutenant zursee, after which he was sent to serve in the submarine fleet.

He served as the second assistant to the U-47 submarine, including during the attack on October 14, 1939 , when the boat penetrated the internal raid of the British naval base at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and sank the Royal Oak battleship. As a result of this impudent operation, in particular, the English fleet was relocated to Loh-Yu Bay for more than six months, until defensive structures were built. In total, during the service on the U-47 from 1939 to 1941, he made 10 military campaigns. He was awarded the Iron Cross of the 1st and 2nd classes.

Flotillas

  • January 1, 1942 - April 30, 1942 - 1st Flotilla (combat service)
  • May 1, 1942 - July 31, 1942 - 9th flotilla (combat service)
