Octave Onichesku ( Rum. Octav Onicescu ; August 20, 1892 , Botosani - August 19, 1983 , Bucharest ) - Romanian mathematician , teacher, professor (since 1929), Ph.D. (1920), full member of the Romanian Academy (1965).

Biography
In 1913 he graduated from the University of Bucharest . From 1914 to 1916 he worked as a mathematics teacher in the gymnasium, not far from Targovishte .
From 1916 to 1918 he participated in the First World War. In 1919 he continued his studies at the University of Rome La Sapienza under the leadership of Tullio Levi-Civita .
In June 1920, received a Ph.D.
In 1922 he returned to Bucharest, where he began his 40-year career at a local university. In 1924 he began to teach a course in probability theory.
Since 1928 - Professor of the University of Bucharest. In 1930 he organized the School of Statistics and created the Institute of Computing, for many years he was its director.
In 1936 he joined the ranks of the Iron Guard .
In 1933 he was elected a corresponding member, and from February 4, 1965 - a full member of the Romanian Academy.
One of the organizers in 1934 of the Balkan Union of Mathematicians and the President of its Romanian Committee.
Member of the International Statistical Institute.
Scientific Activities
Major works relate to algebra, differential geometry, topology, analysis, functional analysis, the theory of functions of a complex variable, the theory of functions of a real variable, the theory of probability, mathematical statistics, general mechanics, statistical mechanics.
Together with G. Mihok, he worked on the generalization of Markov chains .
