The Turonian layer ( Turon ) is the second lower layer of the upper section of the Cretaceous system . It includes rocks formed during the Turonian century , which lasted from 93.9 to 89.8 ± 0.3 Ma ago [1] .

Highlighted by the French paleontologist d'Orgyne in 1842 . It got its name from the historical region of Touraine (France), which the Romans called "Turonia" [2] .

In a typical locality it is composed of sandstones , marls and chalk containing abundant remains of bivalves and cephalopods , sea ​​urchins , foraminifera and other organisms. Widely distributed in the countries of the former USSR and is represented by various types of rocks formed in marine and continental conditions [2] .
