Biography
Ivan Zhurba was born on July 6, 1923 in the Novoaleksandrovka hamlet (now the village of Aleksandrovka, Pavlogradsky District, Dnipropetrovsk Region of Ukraine ).
In 1936 he moved to the Stalin region . He graduated from eight classes of the school and flying club.
In June 1941 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1943, he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation Pilot School.
Since September 1943 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By September 1944, Senior Lieutenant Ivan Zhurba commanded the link of the 237th assault air regiment of the 305th assault air division of the 14th air army of the 3rd Baltic Front . By that time, he had made 108 sorties for reconnaissance and attack of accumulations of military equipment and manpower of the enemy, his objects and communications, inflicting tangible damage on the enemy troops [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 23, 1945, for “exemplary performance of command missions on the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown”, Senior Lieutenant Ivan Zhurba was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ” under number 7362 [1] .
After the war, Zhurba continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1958, he graduated from the Air Force Academy .
In 1980, with the rank of Major General of Aviation, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Minsk , died on August 23, 1983, and was buried in the Eastern cemetery of Minsk [1] .
He was also awarded two orders of the Red Banner , orders of Alexander Nevsky , World War 1 degree, two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
