Geiger, Wilhelm

Wilhelm Ludwig Geiger ( July 21, 1856 - September 2, 1943 ) is a German Indologist and Iranianist, specialist in Pali , Sinhala and Divehi , author of works on aestology and Buddhology, father of physicist Hans Geiger and climatologist Rudolf Geiger .

Biography

Born in Nuremberg in the family of an evangelical priest. He was educated at the University of Erlangen under the scientific supervision of the famous Iranianist and Buddhist scholar Friedrich von Spiegel . In 1878 he received the title of Doctor of Philosophy. Between 1891 and 1920 he was a professor at Erlangen University. After the death of his colleague, Ernst Kuhn began to teach at his department at the University of Munich . In 1895 he made a trip to Sri Lanka.

He died in the city of Neubiberg . He was married to Magdalen Geiger, in the Geiger family there were five children.
