Biography
Alexey Zhuravlev was born in 1913 in the village of Shentala (now the Shentalinsky district of the Samara region ). He graduated from high school and accounting courses, after which he worked as chief accountant in the Shentalinsky district. In July 1941, Zhuravlev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since February 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By August 1944, Captain Aleksey Zhuravlev commanded a battalion of the 132nd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 42nd Guards Rifle Division of the 40th Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . Distinguished himself during the liberation of Romania [1] .
On August 19, 1944, Zhuravlyov’s battalion broke through three lines of German defense in the area of Sochi , 10 kilometers southwest of the city of Pashkani . On August 20, the battalion repelled several German counterattacks, destroying about two companies of enemy infantry. In the battle Zhuravlev was wounded, but continued to fight [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, Captain Alexei Zhuravlev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
In 1945, Zhuravlev was discharged into the reserve for disability. He returned to Shental. He died on February 28, 1958 [1] .
He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
In honor of Zhuravlev the street in Shental is named [1] .
