Italo Montemezzi was born in Vigazo , near Verona . He studied music at the Milan Conservatory , and then studied harmony there for a year.

His opera Love of the Three Kings, written in 1913, marked the beginning of the composer’s professional career. In 1918, the world premiere of the opera “ Ship ” took place in Milan. On November 18, 1919, Montemezzi conducted the “Ship” opera at the Chicago Opera . During the Second World War , since 1939, Montemezzi lived in Southern California . His opera “ My Italy ” (1944) became a memory of the motherland. Subsequently, the composer often visited Italy, returned home in 1949 and died in Vigazio three years later.

In addition to operas, his legacy includes the symphonic poem “Paolo and Virginia” and the cantata “Song of Songs”.

The works of Montemezzi are remarkable for the combination of traditional Italian lyricism with the Wagnerian approach to the use of the orchestra in the opera and instrumental colors developed under the influence of Debussy 's works.
