Nesselrat, Heinz-Gunter

Heinz-Günther Nesselrath ( German Heinz-Günther Nesselrath , born November 9, 1957 , Jülich ) is a German classical scholar , specialist in Lucian , also known for researching the myth of Atlantis in Plato 's Timaeus and Critias .

Education and Careers

In 1976-1981 Nesselrat studied classical philology and ancient history at the University of Cologne , among others with Rudolf Kassel . In the same place, on February 7, 1981 he defended his thesis “ Lucian’s Parasite : Research and Commentary” ( German: Lukians Parasitendialog. Untersuchungen und Kommentar ). In June 1983, passed the state exam in Latin, ancient Greek and pedagogy. In 1981–1989 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Antiquity ( Institut für Altertumskunde ) of the University of Cologne. Nesselrate's habilitation took place on November 11, 1987, based on the work “ Medium-comedy : its place in ancient literary criticism and literary history” ( Die attische Mittlere Komödie. Ihre Stellung in der antiken Literaturkritik und Literaturgeschichte ). For three years (1989-1992) received a scholarship to them. Heisenberg .

Nesselrat was a substitute professor at the universities of Gottingen (spring 1988), Giessen (autumn 1989), Münster (spring 1990) and Bonn (autumn 1990). Since the fall of 1992 - an extraordinary professor, since the spring of 1997 - an ordinary professor of classical philology with special attention to ancient Greek at the University of Bern . Since spring 2001, he has been an ordinary professor of classical philology at the University of Gottingen , where he became the seamstress of Klaus Nikkau . Since April 2002, he has been a permanent member of the Gottingen Academy of Sciences . In the spring of 2004, Visiting Fellow was at Oxford College of All Souls .

He is married to Balbin Bebler , an archaeologist from Switzerland.

Scientific Activities

One of the main research topics of Nesselrata is Atlantis , represented in Plato in the Timaeus and Critias dialogues. Like Pierre Vidal-Nake [1] (by the way, the “silent majority” of the researchers of antiquity), he presents the disappeared continent with the invention of Plato, one of the many myths he created, calling Atlantis “ancient science fiction .”

As one of the main German specialists on Lukian, Nesselrat published a monograph on Parasit (based on his dissertation) and participated in the publication of the “Lover of Lies” in the SAPERE project , dedicated to the late-antique religion.

Nesselrat was also the editor-in-chief of Introduction to Greek Philology ( Einleitung in die griechische Philologie , Stuttgart / Leipzig, 1997). The book was translated in 2001 into Greek, and in 2004 into Italian.

On April 19, 2013, Heinz-Günther Nesselrat and Balbina Bebler spoke at the Department of Classical Philology of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov with lectures on Herodotus .
