Marshal of the Soviet Union A.M. Vasilevsky on the feat of Yu. V. Smirnov

In my memoirs, I cannot give many examples of the heroism of Soviet soldiers. But about one case of amazing courage that shocked us then, I still want to tell.
In the battles for Orsha, a member of the tank landing guard, Private Yu.V. Smirnov, was seriously wounded and captured. We learned about the future when ours entered the city. In one of the dugouts they found the body of a young man nailed to a cross. In the dugout lay staff documents thrown by the Nazis and the interrogation protocol. Here were a soldier’s book and a Komsomol ticket of the guardsman Yuri Vasilyevich Smirnov. He did not answer a single question from the enemy and died as a hero. A citizen of the Soviet Union, Komsomolets Smirnov did not give out military secrets and remained faithful to the Fatherland until his last breath. He was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union ....
