History
The initiator of the creation of the university was the Muslim enlightener Said Ahmad Khan . After the uprising of 1857, a movement emerged in the Muslim community for joining European culture. There was a need to create an educational institution in which young men from Muslim families could prepare to enter the public service or to continue their education at educational institutions in the UK. In 1875, Saeed Ahmad Khan founded the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College ( Eng. Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College ). Great financial support for the new educational institution was provided by Aga Khan III . Initially, the college was administratively subordinate to Calcutta University , then to Allahabad University . In 1920, he received the status of an independent university. University graduates constituted the political and cultural elite of the Muslim community of India at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, the university supported the pan-Indian national liberation struggle, but later Aligarh became the base of the Muslim League and the movement for the formation of Pakistan . Now more than 30 thousand students study at the university.
