Biography
Little is known about his life, his works until the 19th century in Russia were known only from passages found in the writings of the Rev. Joseph Volotsky and in the Slavic Good-Loving , as well as from entire texts stored in the manuscripts of the Moscow Synodal Library and the libraries of Paris, Vienna and other
His creations enjoy great prestige - they are even called the "Small Kindness". Only in 1874 they were published in Russian translation from Greek in Moscow. Of these, the most noteworthy is the argument that one should not be afraid of danger in defending the truth; away from sin; about the commandments of the Lord; about the three powers of the soul; about spiritual warfare.
Peter Damaskin is one of the ancient writers, especially respected by Russian Old Believers [1] . The reason for this was that in the essay included in the Philokalia, the doctrine of two-fingers was set forth: “Two fingers and one hand (δύω δάκτυλοι, και η μια χεὶρ) reveal the Crucified Lord Jesus Christ in two natures and the one Hypostasis of the “ knowable ”( ) [2] [3] [4] . In the Kindness of Love, translated from Greek by Paisius Velichkovsky into Church Slavonic, this place was omitted during translation [5] . In the Russian translation of Theophan the Recluse, all the writings of Peter Damaskin were altogether withdrawn (Good-natured, V volume, 1900). The same fate was in the translation of this place in all editions of the writings of Peter Damaskin, translated from Greek into Russian, the place of double-edgedness was removed [6] .
Paisy Velichkovsky wrote about the works of Peter Damaskin: “I looked in the book and saw that it was the book of St. Peter Damaskin. Inexpressible joy swept through my soul. I felt that I had found heavenly treasure on earth. ” The first translator of his writings into Russian, Archimandrite Yuvenaly (Polovtsev), wrote about Pyotr Damaskin: “A writer is seen in him, not borrowing only words from others, as he speaks of himself, from his deep humility, but he himself, from his own experience, clearly knew the truths of inner life, enlightened by the many subtle networks surrounding the internal and external activities of the Christian ascetic; the warrior is visible, coming out of them elusive, and therefore it is not easy to show the way to others who want to fight.
