Lavrenty Iosifovich Lopas ( lit. Laurynas Lopas , November 20, 1878 [2] [1] - October 16, 1953) - veterinarian, Lithuanian public figure, deputy of the State Duma of the I convocation from the Coven province .

Biography

Lithuanian, Roman Catholic religion. From the peasants of the village Dvarelishki ( Stobovschizna ) of the Krukovsky volost of the Shavelsky district of the Coven province [3] . He graduated from the Alexander gymnasium in Riga [4] . He studied at the Roman Catholic seminary in Kovno, but left it, refusing to take the dignity [5] . He entered the Yuryev Veterinary Institute . By the time of the election to the State Duma of the first convocation, I was a 2nd year student. Member of the Lithuanian National Democratic Party.

March 26, 1906 was elected to the State Duma of the I convocation from the congress of commissioners from the volosts of the Coven province . He entered the Labor Group and the Lithuanian Group. Member of the agrarian commission and the commission on the preparation of the address. He signed the bill “On Civil Equality”, a statement on the formation of the Commission for the Investigation of Crimes of Officials, and a statement on the formation of local agrarian committees. He spoke in the Duma on the agrarian question.

On July 10, 1906, in the city of Vyborg, he signed the Vyborg Appeal and was convicted under Art. 129, part 1, paragraphs 51 and 3 of the Criminal Code [6] , sentenced to 3 months in prison and deprived of the right to run for any elected office.

Since 1909 he continued his education at the Yuryev Veterinary Institute and in 1911 he graduated with honors. In 1912 he settled in Ioniskis , where he began to engage in private practice as a veterinarian. During the First World War in 1914, drafted into the Russian army, received the rank of major. In 1917, he took part in organizing assistance to Lithuanian military refugees, organized the first refugee council, and was its chairman. He returned to Lithuania after gaining independence in 1918, took part in the work of local government committees in Ioniskis . In 1919 he was one of the founders of the Joniškis Gymnasium and the nursing home. Thanks to his concerns, a modern slaughterhouse was built in accordance with the requirements of existing sanitary standards. Actively participated in the creation of various cooperatives. He was the founder and member of a committee concerned about poor students being exempted from tuition. In 1940 he retired. In 1941, he escaped the first wave of deportation, was transferred to work in the Lazdijai region. After the restoration of Soviet power in Lithuania, he was again appointed head veterinarian in Joniskis [5] .

October 21, 1946 arrested, sentenced to ten years in prison in confinement camps with confiscation of property [5] . He was in the Matsikai prison two kilometers east of Šilutė , which was a concentration camp for the Germans, and with the advent of the Red Army it became a unit of the Gulag . According to the memoirs of his associates, Lopas was a noble person and a well-educated man, he knew Latin, Ancient Greek and Hebrew, was an inventor and owned many crafts (jewelry, watch and shoe repair, blacksmithing and gardening). In the camp he worked as a nurse in the male tuberculosis department. His duties also included the autopsy of deceased prisoners, in a coffin at the feet of the dead he secretly hid bottles with notes about the deceased and the reasons for his death [7] .

Lopas died on October 16, 1953 at the Shilut camp. In 1955, his remains were reburied at the Ioniskis cemetery [5] .
