Najaf [1] (Najaf, Arab. محافظة النجف muḥāfaẓa an-Najaf) - a governorate in the center of Iraq . In the southwest it borders with Saudi Arabia , in the northwest with Karbala governorate, in the northeast with Babil and Cadizia governorates, and in the southeast with Mutanna governorate. The predominant religion is Shia Islam.

The administrative center is the city of Najaf , another major city is Al-Kufa . Both cities are shrines for Shiites.
Until 1976, it was part of the province of Diwa , which also included the governorates of Cadizia and Mutann .
