Biography

Born in the settlement of Taranovka, Zmievsky uyezd of the Slobodsko-Ukrainian province (now Kharkiv region ) in the family of a poor landowner F. K. Pavlovsky. Primary education in the Valkovsky National School. In 1799 he entered the Kharkov Collegium , which he graduated in 1806 and entered the Imperial University of Kharkiv , which had just opened at that time, among a number of official students of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, where his outstanding abilities attracted the attention of A. I. Stoykovich and T. F. Osipovsky .

Already in 1810 he began to teach students algebra , geometry , trigonometry, and conic sections ; He also taught arithmetic and geometry to civilian officials. At Kharkov University, where foreign teachers played a predominant role at that time, Pavlovsky became one of the first Russian scientists. In 1813 he received a master's degree, from 1815 - an adjunct in the department of pure mathematics. In 1819, A. F. Pavlovsky was approved as an extraordinary professor, and in 1826 he became a full professor. In addition, on behalf of the University Council , he held various positions: he was secretary of the Council (1828–1829), librarian of the university library (1830–1837), student inspector (1833–1835).

In 1837, Pavlovsky was appointed rector of the university; but next year I received permission to leave this position. The university took care of the distribution of schools in the region, and for this purpose Pavlovsky repeatedly traveled to different places of the school district; in 1826, he spent 8 months in the Don region. He retired in 1849. And in 1850, the University Council elected A. F. Pavlovsky as an honorary member.

At the end of the 1880s, a prize for the best works in mathematics from the name of A. F. Pavlovsky was established at the Kharkov University at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the expense of his son, Fyodor Andreyevich Pavlovsky.
